Customers shocked at Eskom’s 44% tariff hike request

JOHANNESBURG – The DA is demanding energy regulator Nersa explain how it determines tariff increases.
It follows Nersa’s admission that tariff hikes had been based on the wrong legal interpretation.
Eskom intends applying for a 44 percent hike for municipalities and 36 percent for direct customers.

It’s caused an outcry as it comes on the back of an almost 13 percent increase in April.
The DA says Nersa must disclose its methodology to avoid unjustly burdening South Africans.
Parliament is set to debate the issue next Tuesday.
